TSP MacroTrade
The TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio is one of our "Alternative Asset Class" Portfolios. In short, these portfolios invest in a wide range of asset classes and are not limited to just stocks.
Focusing On The Macro Themes of the Markets
The portfolio strategy for the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio allows complete flexibility in terms of asset allocation. You see, there are no no predetermined guidelines whatsoever as to the level of stocks, bonds, cash, regions, countries, commodities, currencies, sectors, or even asset classes in the portfolio!
However, unlike our TopStocks FlexPro portfolio, which is a trend and momentum-based portfolio designed to focus on the best performing asset classes, the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio takes a "big picture" view of the investment world and focuses the portfolio on the market's macro themes.
If this portfolio strategy sounds familiar, it should. You see, many of the biggest and best performing hedge fund managers such as George Soros and Paul Tudor Jones implement a macro trading strategy in their funds.
Make no mistake about it; this is NOT a traditional portfolio that focuses on common instment styles such as value, growth, or trend-following. This portfolio takes a "big picture" view by focusing on a handful of major themes each year.

How the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio Works
The approach to our TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio is fairly straightforward. Our research team first seeks out the major themes in the markets that are either currently taking place or are likely to occur in the future. Another way to describe our strategy is we implement an "anticipatory approach" to investing. But to put it succinctly, our goal is to "be there" for the major moves in the markets.
We then establish a position (either long or short) in each of our themes. However, it is important to understand that these are not short-term "hot money" types of trades. Major themes take time to develop and play out. Thus, it will take time to establish positions and we will usually make purchases at several different levels. Thus, it is important to note that this portfolio will NOT act like "the market" (nor should it) as we are likely to be "early" when establishing new positions.
Whenever we make a move in the portfolio, we send members a TRADE ALERT! telling you exactly what we are about to do and why. And to clarify, the portfolio consists of both stocks and low cost, tax efficient ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds).
So, to sum up; we do all the research legwork, we tell you EXACTLY what we are about to do and why, and then we follow it up with a performance summary every week.
Using 2008 As An Example
Since it is fresh in everyone's minds, we can look back at 2008 to create an example of the approach we take in the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio. While 2008 will be remembered as a devastating year for stock market investors, believe it or not, there were tremendous opportunities to make money.
For example, coming into 2008, the China-Demand based commodities theme was well established. In fact, we owned a great deal of commodity-based ETF's in our FlexPro portfolio - we owned positions the CRB Commodity Index as well as positions in Oil, Natural Gas, Steel, Coal, and Agriculture. And as the chart of the DBC (the PowerShares Commodity Index ETF) below illustrates, the commodity theme was well entrenched.

Thus, the commodity theme would have represented a major stake in the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio.
However, as everyone now knows, this theme ended - and ended badly - about mid-summer, along with just about every other "long" theme. Therefore, as the credit crisis developed, the next macro theme would have been to be short the U.S. stock market. And this is perhaps the only time that the chart below could be viewed as a happy sight.

Next, as the "Helicopter Ben" lived up to his name and began to flood the system with money - partly in an effort to stave of financial Armageddon and prevent the collapse of the banking system, being long the bond market was the theme to play.

Sure, there were other major themes that were available and many ways to profit. However, we have chosen these three to illustrate the concept of how the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio works.
What's the next big theme? As of this writing (December 1, 2008) we are looking for a rally in the U.S. stock, we are preparing to short the U.S. Bond market, and we are looking to put on an "inflation trade" within the next 6 months.
However, to find out for sure, you'll have to give the TopStock MacroTrade Portfolio a try!
