The increasing popularity of Exchange Traded Funds (ETF's) creates almost limitless opportunities for individual investors. But with a universe of more than 800 ETF's available to investors these days that possess sufficient liquidity, the decision of what to own can quickly become overwhelming. To help with this dilemma, we have developed two brand new reports that focus exclusively on ETFs: The Leaders and the ETF Big Money Flow. The reports are free to all visitors and is updated weekly.
We use both of these reports (along with a boatload of additional data) in our TSP FlexPro Portfolio. In case you're not familiar with the service, the portfolio consists entirely of ETF's and utilizes a flexible approach of asset allocation. There are no predetermined guidelines whatsoever as to the level of stocks, bonds, cash, regions, countries, sectors, or even asset classes in the portfolio! In short, this is a completely flexible portfolio designed to follow the performance trail wherever it leads us. The portfolio consists entirely of low-cost, tax efficient ETF's with an overall objective to “own the best and ignore the rest.” More specifically, from a universe of over 800 ETFs, the TopStock FlexPro Portfolio will own only the top performers.
Please excuse the brief commercial, but here's a link to take a Try the FlexPro Portfolio.
Getting to the topic at hand, below is a summary of where the big money is flowing in our ETF universe. This report shows what funds have new shares either being created or redeemed by "authorized participants" (I.E. the "big money" players).
In case you’re not familiar with the term (most of us weren’t) an authorized participant is an entity (typically large institutional organizations, such as market makers or specialists) chosen by an exchange-traded fund's (ETF) sponsor to undertake the responsibility of obtaining the underlying assets needed to create an ETF.
The thinking behind the report is simple. Identify the ETF's with the largest amount of new money flows and you've likely spotted the leaders. And in turn, if we can identify which ETF's are seeing the biggest redemptions, we will know what to avoid (or even short).
Below is this week's summary of where the big money is flowing in our ETF Universe:

Do Ratings Matter?
We may be biased, but we certainly think so! Below is a summary of a test run by one of the largest institutional research firms in the country. The test assumes investors would hold the top 20% of ETF's and then rebalance on a monthly basis.
