Will The Elevator Door Finally Slam Shut on Donald Trump?

by David Wismer

Donald Trump would likely fire any of his Celebrity Apprentice contestants on counts too numerous to list here if they failed to deliver on one of their assignments.

The Donald failed big time today, teasing the heck out of his “major announcement” and failing to bring anything new to the party, except a reinforcement of his obsession with the President’s bona fides (citizenship being the obvious target once again).

And perhaps Mr. Trump should listen to his own advice, “Part of being a winner is knowing when enough is enough. Sometimes you have to give up the fight and walk away, and move on to something that's more productive.”

At least Trump was punctual, delivering his video announcement almost exactly on time via Twitter and Facebook. Here’s the video.

For those without the time and inclination to sit through it, Mr. Trump began his YouTube video by stating, “President Obama is the least transparent President in the history of this country.”

Trump challenged the President to reveal his “college and passport applications and records” by 5:00 PM on October 31, 2012, and if they are released in full, Mr. Trump will donate $5 million to a designated charity immediately.

No new revelations were made, but obviously Trump expects that such documents will reveal a deep dark secret or inconsistency in Mr. Obama’s past, and according to the press release, “not only will I be happy, and totally satisfied, but the American people will be happy and the selected charity will be very, very happy.”

And why Mr. Trump thinks Americans are clamoring for this information is beyond us. And why this is helpful to his commitment toward a Romney victory is also very questionable.

The Obama campaign, through Senior Advisor David Plouffe said, “Direct your questions to Boston (Romney’s campaign headquarters), he’s (Trump) Romney’s biggest supporter.” (ABC News).

The media was all over this with disappointment and derision:

“Donald Trump's 'Major' News Now Twitter Laughingstock” (ABC)

“Was Donald Trump’s Announcement A Gigantic, Pointless Waste of Time By A Venal Con Artist?” (Huffington Post)

“Donald Trump Makes President Obama an Offer He Will Definitely Refuse.” (New York Magazine)

“Donald Trump’s ‘Big Announcement’ Not So Big” (CBS)

You get the drift of course.

And some of the tweets are far more entertaining than anything else about this entire story:

@NYMag “Our expectations about @realDonaldTrump's Obama announcement were clearly not low enough.”

@TIME “Surprise! Donald Trump's much-hyped Obama announcement is actually about Trump himself.”

@RBReich “Donald Trump is to the public interest what a hog is to fecal matter. “

@the_moonface “Sorry Trump, but in the same way the U.S. doesn't negotiate with terrorists, presidents shouldn't negotiate with idiots.”

And it goes on and on.

Forbes did some actual reporting on the story, calling the Trump organization in an effort to find out why Trump is continuing down this strategic path, which has not yielded anything tangible since it started some time ago (and we think is at least a minor distraction to a few more important issues).

Forbes.com wrote:

Trump denied his Obama ultimatum is in any way self-serving, nor intended to generate publicity for himself or the upcoming season of his NBC show Celebrity Apprentice.

“This should be seen as a positive for Obama,” Trump told us. “There’s a huge cloud hanging over this presidency. This could be solved in a positive and easy manner.”

Let’s hope we have seen the end of the story and that Mr. Trump disappears down that elevator, at least on this issue.
