Europe Update: Markit Manufacturing PMI Indices

The final readings for January’s Markit Purchasing Managers Indexes (PMI) for Europe were updated today. Here are the results:

Markit Manufacturing PMI’s:

  • Eurozone Manufacturing PMI: 48.8 vs. consensus 48.7 and last month’s 48.7
  • Germany Manufacturing PMI: 51.0 vs. consensus 50.9 and last month’s 50.9
  • France Manufacturing PMI: 48.5 vs. consensus 48.5 and last month’s 48.5
  • Italy Manufacturing PMI: 46.8 vs. consensus 45.0 and last month’s 44.3

The good news is that the three of the four major PMI’s showed improvement over the December readings and that the readings in the Eurozone, Italy, and Germany were above the consensus levels. However, it is important to note that this is the fifth consecutive month that the PMI for the Eurozone has remained under the all-important 50 level.

Recall that readings over 50 represent growth in the sector while readings under 50 suggest the manufacturing sector is contracting.
