China Economic Update: Purchasing Managers’ Index
The China Federation of Logistics & Planning reported that China’s official PMI came in at 50.5 in January.
The reading was above the 50.3 reading seen in December and also above the all-important 50 mark. The Bloomberg consensus estimate had been for a reading of 49.6.
For comparison purposes:
- November: 49.0
- October: 50.4
- September: 51.2
- August: 50.9
According to Bloomberg, the new orders gauge of the PMI expanded in January for the first time in three months and output rose at a faster pace. Sub-indexes for export orders, imports and employment contracted further.
However, an alternative PMI reading from HSBC came in at 48.8 in January vs. the preliminary (or Flash reading) of 48.8 and last month's 48.7.
Readings above 50 indicate the sector is expanding while readings below 50 are indicative of contraction.
